    Instruction
Each sports activity site is organized with a Department Head who is a professional in the sport.  Staff Instructors are specialists who are hand picked for their sports knowledge and their ability to relate this knowledge to children.

    Teaching Philosophy
Our teaching philosophy is based upon our experience that learning with fun is the best way for kids to learn.  Activity instruction covers the fundamentals and from there progresses to address every aspect of the sport.  From beginner to advanced, campers learn at their own pace in a fun, relaxed, stress-free environment.

    Non-Competitive
Lohikan is a no-pressure, non-competitive camp.  Our Sports Program concentrates on skill development and recreational play. (Skill level certifications are awarded in all of our activities.)  Campers are never forced into uncomfortable situations where there's a possibility of being "shown up".  Instead, we encourage our campers to go out and try new activities and not worry about being the best.  At Lohikan, we believe that you don't have to be the best to have the most fun.
    Inter-Camp Games
While our Daily Activity Program is non-competitive, we do offer a number of optional activities for campers who thrive on spirited competition.  Camp Lohikan offers a full range of summer-long inter-camp games scheduled with over a dozen camps located in Wayne County.  (Last summer we had more than 160 inter-camp games!)  Teams are open for participation on a voluntary basis to all interested campers.  (No try outs! )  And, as long as the camper attends scheduled practice sessions, the camper is guaranteed playing time in all of the inter-camp games.
Our coaches are professionals who take great care to ensure that the spirit of our Inter-Camp Games is not allowed to influence the values and pleasures of the sport.  Good sportsmanship is emphasized at all times and Lohikan's campers are taught how to be as gracious in victory as in defeat.
    Tournaments & Leagues
Free time after lunch and dinner is the perfect time for tournaments and league games. Campers interested in signing up for a tournament (i.e. tennis, golf, tetherball) or participating in a league (i.e. after dinner softball, basketball, soccer, football, baseball, roller hockey, lacrosse, etc.) are guaranteed playing time and athletic fun. Lohikan's Intra-Camp Programs are very effective in developing the camper's playing skills, building character and providing a risk-free opportunity for youngsters to share in the spirit of sportsmanship and competition.

    Water Sports
The water sports program is comprehensive and wide ranging at Camp Lohikan.  We operate our aquatics program on our lake and at our swimming pool.
Lohikan’s lake is private and boasts a staff of over 22 lifeguards, 50+ boats and includes instruction and certification in: sailing, water skiing, windsurfing, canoeing and jet skiing.  We also instruct campers in kayaking, paddle boating, and fishing.  In addition to the traditional waterfront activities, Lohikan’s lake program features a recreational “lake park” which includes amusements like the Tarzan swing, iceberg, rolling log, water trampoline and blob.  To round out the waterfront program, we take qualified campers on Delaware River canoe trips and day-long rafting trips.
Lohikan’s swimming pool is heated and used to teach swimming (American Red Cross) and operate free swims, swim meets, evening pool parties, and pool special events.  Our pool staff members are all lifeguard certified and hold WSI certification from the American Red Cross.

    Horseback Riding
Lohikan's Horsemanship Program features a stable of 30 horses, 2 outdoor riding rings, a huge indoor riding ring, and over 7 miles of trails.  We ride rain or shine!
The instructional program includes beginner to advanced riding classes in English Equitation.  Advanced riders qualify for instruction in competitive jumping.
In addition to instructional classes, riders can participate in trail rides (over 7 miles of trails!), horseback overnights, evening trail rides, in-camp and inter-camp horse shows (Everyone wins a ribbon!), horse care clinics, and horse show team practices.  Horse enthusiasts can spend more time at the stables by volunteering to help the riding staff with the care of the horses and barn duties!
It’s a comprehensive program that provides beginner through advanced riders with excellent instruction and an equestrian experience that covers the gamut.

    Paintball
Paintball is operated every day at Camp Lohikan.  Our speedball field is equipped with lights so we even play at night!!!
Camp Lohikan features 2 paintball fields that cover over 10 acres of woods, fields and streams.  We have a 4 acre speedball field with numerous man-made and natural objects (bunkers) including a 500 square foot building structure.  We also have a woods-ball playing field which offers players a variety of terrains and all types of cover.  The woods-ball field covers over 6 acres surrounding a mountain top which is perfect for those “King of the Hill” games!
The program is designed for all skill levels – beginner through advanced.  Campers are taught skills of the game by paintball specialists and play recreational games with fellow campers.
For campers who want to participate in more intense competitions we offer a program called “Paintball Camp”.  In this program campers are trained in paintball combat methods and learn to work as a team for competing in the Inter-Camp Paintball Tournaments!  They’re awesome!

    Skateboarding
Inline Skating and Skateboarding are the fastest growing sports at Lohikan!  They're hot!!!  And we've got the grinding rails, sky ramps, half pipes, quarter pipes, wedge ramps, spines, jumps and boxes to make skating the most fun!  It's all part of our skating program and our newly constructed "Ray Young Skate Park"!
Whether you're an inexperienced inline skater/skateboarder or a skater with advanced skills, this summer you'll definitely learn more skills and sharpen what skills you already have.  Lohikan's instructors are hand-picked for their skating skills and ability to teach these skills.  The skate park is open all day long and instructors are scheduled so as to provide the individual attention you'll need to take your skating to the next level.  Most skateboarders and inline skaters learn more in a week at camp than they would in months of practice on their own!
Beginners are taught the basics.  Inline Skaters practice balance and skating fundamentals and then move on to the tricks.  Skateboarders are taught everything from elementary techniques like ollieing to grinds and airs.  The atmosphere is stress-free, positive and a lot of fun!
For campers who enjoy the added excitement of public performances, we sponsor X-Game Events every 2 weeks.  Skaters and skateboarders have a great time exhibiting their skills in front of a camper audience. The applause is a great motivator!

    Tennis
Camp Lohikan's Tennis Program is perfect for the individual interested in learning to play tennis as well as the junior athlete looking to improve his or her game. Many campers choose Lohikan over specialty tennis camps because of the quality of our tennis program.
Lohikan's Tennis Center features 11 hard-surfaced tennis courts. which are lit for night play. All of the courts are in perfect condition and lit for night play. Ball machines, junior and regular sized rackets, and thousands of balls are supplied by the camp as part of the program.
Lohikan's tennis instructors are selected from among the best in the world.  Our Tennis Director, Jim Jensen, is an accomplished tennis professional with extensive junior, adult, college and international coaching experience. Jim was recently recognized as "Tennis Coach of the Year" for the state of Nebraska by the USTA Tennis Organization.  Our staff of 10 tennis instructors include tennis professionals and college-level players all of whom are experienced teaching tennis to children from beginner to advanced level play.
Lohikan's tennis program philosophy is based upon our experience that teaching with fun is the best way for kids to learn.  When campers arrive at the tennis center they are evaluated and placed in one of three ability levels.  Class sizes are never larger than 4 campers to 1 instructor.  This ensures that everyone receives enough individual attention to maximize the learning experience.
Lohikan's Elective Program guarantees at least 15 periods (hours) of tennis instruction a week.  In addition to 15 instructional periods, 14 hours a week of free-time recreational play is also available.  Tennis enthusiasts can get even more game play by participating in weekly tennis tournaments and inter-camp game matches.
Private one-on-one tennis lessons with a USPTA certified pro are also available.

    Camp Lohikan - A 53 Year Tradition

Since 1957 Camp Lohikan has been owned and operated by the Buynak Family.  For 53 summers the Buynak Family and Camp Lohikan's dedicated staff have provided campers with a safe, caring environment to make new friends, professional instruction to learn new skills and sharpen old ones, and a friendly camp atmosphere where FUN happens all the time!

We have a great summer planned for 2010 and we invite you to join us in the FUN!

JUNIOR PROGRAM (age 9 and younger) – STRUCTURED:  Junior campers travel as a cabin group with their cabin counselor to activities designed for their age group.  Certain activity sites offer electives which allow the juniors choice in their programming while still maintaining cabin counselor supervision.  Counselors for junior cabins are specifically chosen for their experience and ability to work with younger campers.

INTER/SENIOR PROGRAM (age 10 and older) – INDIVIDUALIZED:  Older campers get to choose all of their activities at Lohikan.  Activities are chosen on a weekly basis and adjusted daily.  It’s individualized scheduling at its finest!  You can adjust your schedule to travel with friends or specialize in as many activities as you want.  The choice is yours!  And your activity choices are guaranteed!  EVERY DAY!

Regardless of age or program format, particular attention is paid to camper supervision and safety throughout the day.  Program activities are instructed with appropriate emphasis on skill development and FUN!

FIRST-TIME CAMPER PROGRAM: First-time campers are our specialty!  We have a comprehensive program (before, during, and after the camp season) designed to make the first-time camp experience an easy and successful endeavor.  We even offer first-time camping families a unique Great Camp Guarantee which provides for a tuition refund if the camper leaves camp early.  No risk camping is here!

TEEN PROGRAM: The individualized format of our daily program is ideal for teens.  In addition to the free-choice program format, activities are coed for teenagers.  Evening activities and special events are operated by division.  Senior division events are geared for our oldest campers like: Senior Beach Parties, DJ Disco Extravaganzas, Senior Socials, Senior Trips, Senior Tiki Bivouac, Senior Snack Bar & Game Room, Senior Experiment Week, Lohikan’s Camp-A-Palooza Concerts, and lots more!

Teenagers who age out of the program can continue their camp experiences by joining Lohikan's Junior Staff Mentoring Program.  Participants in the Leadership Training Program are guaranteed a counselor staff position at camp after 2 summers of leadership training.  That’s summer job security!

65+ DAILY ACTIVITIES:  In addition to the Sports Activities listed on top of the page Camp Lohikan also operates an extensive Adventure Program and Arts Program that feature: Jet Skiing, Paintball, Swimming (recreational and instruction), Sailing, Windsurfing, Scuba, Canoeing, Tarzan Lake Swing, Rave Water Trampoline, Bungee Trampoline, Circus Arts, Flying Trapeze, Dance, Drama, Music (Guitar, Bass, Keyboards, Drums, Voice), Rock Band, Backpacking Trips, High & Low Ropes, Real Rock Climbing, Zip Lines, Delaware River Canoe Trips, Outdoor Living Skills, Orienteering, Creative Arts (14 workshops), Woodworking, Ceramics, Pottery, Rocketry, Chess, Radio Broadcasting, Video Production, Photography, Cooking, Computers, Email (Campers can email home every day!), Mountain Cycling, Mountain Boarding, and lots more!

SPECIAL SUMMER CLINICS for 2010: Clinics are specially scheduled and staffed, concentrated instructional programs designed to focus the camper's attention and time on improving a specific set of skills.  Certain clinics are an outgrowth of programs already operating on a daily basis but offered to provide campers, with strong interest, an opportunity to become immersed in the activity (3-4 hours per day) with the purpose of producing more advanced skills in a relatively short period of time, i.e. High-5 Basketball Clinic, Competitive Tennis, Skate Camp X-Games Clinic, etc.  Other clinics feature programs and activities (skill development) not offered in the camp's daily activity line-up, i.e. Spy Camp, Survival Camp.

In addition to building skills and self-confidence and just being a lot of FUN, the Clinics Program adds diversity to the summer camp program and is very popular with many of our campers.  This summer's clinics include: Spy Camp, Rock Band Camp, The Equestrian Clinic, Paintball Camp, Hip Hop Clinic, Cheerleading Camp, DJ Clinic, Competitive Tennis Clinic, High-5 Basketball Clinic, Golf Clinic, and Skate Camp X-Games Clinic!

CAMP MISSION: Our mission is to provide the staff, the program and the caring, supportive camp environment that will enhance the camper's artistic, athletic and social skills and, with positive encouragement and reinforcement, develop in the camper a greater sense of self-esteem and self-confidence.

CAMP STAFF:  When it comes down to it, camp staff is what a successful camp is all about.  A great camp experience is only possible with great camp staff.  This is where we shine!  Our 50+ senior staff members are adult professionals who assume supervisory responsibilities in camp and at least 90% return every summer.  Our in-cabin counselors are college-enrolled staff members.  Over 50% return every summer.  Ninety percent of our staff are Americans who are recruited from all over the United States for their skills, experience and ability to work with children.  All staff members are interviewed, references are contacted and criminal background checks are performed.  During our pre-camp orientation period staff members are certified in safety procedures, qualified for instructional responsibilities and trained in counseling skills to provide the caring, supportive camp atmosphere that has characterized Camp Lohikan since its beginning.

MEDICAL STAFF:  A camp physician is in residence the entire summer.  In addition to the camp doctor, 5 registered nurses and 3 assistants staff the camp health center which is open 24 hours a day.  Our 53 year safety record is impeccable.
