  • Description:

This program is available only for High School students entering their Senior Year in September 2008.

Acting Tisch School of the Arts offers conservatory training (28 hours each week) at three professional acting studios: the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute, the Experimental Theatre Wing (ETW), or the Collaborative Arts Project 21 (CAP21). Playwriting and screenwriting courses also offered.

NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts offers summer conservatory training for high school students at three renowned professional studios:

    1. The Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute, famous for the “method” acting technique, classes include television/film, speech, and movement.

    2. The Experimental Theatre Wing (ETW), including contact improvisation, character-based scene work, and extended vocal technique.

    3. Musical theatre performance at the Collaborative Arts Project 21 (CAP21), including acting, dance, and vocal techniques.

Similar courses in Dublin and Paris. A summer high school program in dramatic writing is also available, where students train in the basics of both screenwriting and playwriting.

    Film and Television

The Tisch School of the Arts program in Film and Television combines intensive professional training with a comprehensive understanding of the techniques and theories behind the art of film and video production. Experience in film or video is not required.

Study where award-winning filmmakers such as Jim Jarmusch, Spike Lee, and Martin Scorsese trained—the Tisch School of the Arts.

In the summer Filmmakers Workshop, high school students work in teams to develop their directing, shooting, and editing skills as they produce music videos and short videos (three to five minutes in length). Students also learn the basics of screenwriting. A summer high school program in dramatic writing is also available, where students train in the basics of both screenwriting and playwriting.

    Photography and Video

This Tisch School of the Arts Program in Photography and Imaging is for beginning and advanced level high school students. It’s a rigorous combination of darkroom work; critiques of student work; cultural, technical, and historical lectures; and visits to gallery exhibitions.

The Tisch School of the Arts Program in Photography and Imaging focuses on using photo-based image making for communication, creative expression, and personal exploration.

Introduction to 35 mm manual cameras, proper black-and-white film exposure, and darkroom printing, as well as color slide film, scanning, basic Photoshop, and digital color printing. Work is exhibited at Tisch. Students visit artists’ studios. Video production course also offered (see Film and Television).

    Dramatic Writing

The Tisch School of the Arts Summer High School Program in Dramatic Writing introduces students to the exciting world of dramatized storytelling.

The program provides students with rigorous basic training in the basics of both playwriting and screenwriting. In the Summer High School Program in Dramatic Writing, offered by the Rita and Burton Goldberg Department of Dramatic Writing at Tisch School of the Arts, students learn the fundamentals of dramatic structure in lecture and discussion sessions on playwriting and screenwriting, as well as develop scripts in each medium.

Students present their work, which is then reviewed, critiqued, and rewritten, in workshop sessions. This culminates in an outline and partial scripting of a full-length screenplay and a 10-minute play. Student monologues are directed and acted by professional actors and directors.
